Hey, everyone! This week's episode is a bit of a setup/background episode. You'll get a chance to understand a little more why Kai's potential hearing loss is such a big deal for him, with a few tidbits about Deaf culture thrown in.
Just a reminder that Deaf refers to the culture, or people who primarily use ASL as their form of communication. It has its own customs, history, and etiquette that are often very different from the mainstream "hearing" culture that surrounds it. Without the capital, deaf refers to the inability to hear. I wanted to make that clear from the beginning since Kai uses these terms frequently, especially in this episode.
Last Week on In/Exhale: Kai finished up his last day of class and got a bombshell: when he was sick back in December, Jon needed to make a tough choice for him. Either take a risk that Kai died from the infection, or try a combination of drugs that could potentially damage Kai's inner ear. Now, weeks later, Kai is starting to feel the effects of those drugs as he begins having tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing problems.
This Week on In/Exhale: Shaken up by the revelation that he may be going deaf, Kai discusses the issue with Dr. Miller, exploring why he's so afraid of losing his hearing. After, Kai begins his first day of anniversary tests with some bloodwork, but things never do go smoothly for our hero....
Next Week on In/Exhale: Testing day continues as Kai goes to his dermatologist, but what should be a routine exam doesn't end up quite how Kai expected, especially with his hearing out. Vicky finally makes her reappearance in the story.
Thank you again to everyone who follows the story and takes the time to comment. I really do appreciate it.
I've updated the Table of Contents as always.
