Sorry this is so late! It's been a rough weekend and I was trying to see if I could manage the double-episode but it's not going to happen, sorry!! There's one more scene I'm adding and I'm not sure yet if it will be a part of next week's episode or the following week's.
This week's episode is actually part of some scenes I wrote very early in the process of writing Season 3. Kai's blooming relationship with Martin is one of those things that came about unexpectedly but that I really love, and I hope you will too as it continues to develop.
I also hope you'll enjoy seeing the return of a character who has made a small appearance in a couple episodes in the past, which you may want to re-read to refresh your memory (but aren't necessary to enjoy this episode at all): Flashback: May 19, 1994 and the fifth scene of Flashback: June 14-21 1996.
This character will make other appearances this season after this, too, and will play an important role in Kai's journey.
Previously on In/Exhale: Kai has been fighting through his depression and suicidal thoughts, not to mention his PTSD in an attempt to live his life despite them, but it's been a struggle. Art, sensing Kai's mood, takes Kai to visit the cemetery and tells Kai the truth about his three sons. All three served in Vietnam, two dying there and one taking his life shortly after due to PTSD. His death was particularly hard on both Art and his wife, and she died not long after. This story resonates with Kai's current struggles.
Despite everything Kai has been dealing with, he has been visiting Martin Gomez regularly. The boy is one of Jon's patients and is slowly dying of the same lung disease that nearly killed Kai before he thankfully got a lung transplant.
This week on In/Exhale: Kai and Art conclude their field trip with a trip to the diner, where Art encourages Kai to seek out help before giving up. Kai then goes to Martin's, looking forward to some down time with the kid, watching funny movies and joking around to keep the darkness at bay. He's shocked when someone from his past makes an unexpected appearance, and gives Martin some romantic advice.
Next week on In/Exhale: Kai's visit with Martin continues, and he ends up staying a lot longer than normal in a desperate attempt to stay ahead of his low mood and dark thoughts. After Kai leaves, Martin gets upset which pushes him to his physical limit and puts his life in jeopardy. Vicky is concerned that Jon's anxiety is getting worse and beginning to affect his ability to function, but he refuses to get help despite admitting that he's scared he can't control his worrying anymore. Kai goes to Renee's to spend the night, afraid of being alone.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting!
Remember, if you've forgotten what Kai and his pals got up to in the first part of Season 3, you can read the "Previously On..." to refresh your memory. Or you can hit the updated Table of Contents to re-read any episode. Also keep in mind that I'm posting each complete chapter (day) on my blog once it's all posted here, so you can read them in their entirety if you prefer that format. I also accept comments (including anonymous ones) there if you prefer. Happy reading!
